People often think a vehicle inspection is just another expense when buying a used car. But Mr Gunathunga’s Toyota Aqua story shows why spending a little on an inspection before buying can save much more later. Here’s how it went.
A Rush to Buy a Low-Mileage Aqua
Mr Gunathunga, a first-time buyer in Kandy, wanted a fuel-efficient daily driver. He found a Toyota Aqua with unusually low mileage and a clean-looking exterior.
The seller’s story sounded reassuring which was “Very low mileage. Mostly used by my wife. No major repairs”.
The problem? Mr Gunathunga was in a hurry. He wanted the car checked quickly. So, we arranged Same-Day Vehicle Inspections so he did not have to delay his plans.
What the Vehicle Inspection Found?
The Aqua looked fine at first. But a closer check told a different story.
The vehicle inspection found signs of previous accident repairs around the front structure. There were uneven panel gaps, and paint readings suggested some areas had received more than a cosmetic touch-up.
Previous accident damage does not always mean a car is unsafe. However, repairs around structural areas deserve attention, especially when the seller says there have been no major repairs.

The Inspection Changed the Buying Decision
Mr Gunathunga used the inspection report to negotiate. He explained the repair findings and asked the seller to agree to a price that reflected the vehicle’s history.
The seller refused to agree.
He walked away.
That is where a pre purchase vehicle inspection can prove its value. It did not simply point out problems. It helped the buyer avoid paying for a car that came with unanswered questions.
A vehicle inspection may feel like an extra cost at the start. But when a clean-looking Toyota Aqua hides accident repairs, it can be the expense that saves you from a much bigger one.
