Strange knocking or tapping? Don’t brush it off as “old car noise”. A deep knocking sound can mean trouble inside the engine, and repairs aren’t exactly pocket change.
Engine shaking at idle? If the car feels like it’s struggling while sitting at a traffic light, there could be an issue with the ignition, fuel system, sensors, or engine compression.
Oil around the engine? Have a proper look. Fresh oil leaks or a strong burnt-oil smell deserve attention.
Temperature climbing? Big red flag. Overheating can lead to major engine damage if the problem is left unchecked.

Don’t Take the Seller’s Word for It
